Cave Environment Metrics – Pro Ambient Tracker Specially developed for cavers: "Cave Environment Metrics" is a highly specialized data field for extreme environments. Where GPS signals fail, this module takes over the analysis of your watch's raw sensor data to provide you with an exact physical representation of your environment – complemented by an innovative efficiency analysis of your movements. Unlike standard data fields, this module uses a temperature-compensated barometric formula to determine relative depth. The result is a millimeter-precise recording of ascents and descents. Maximum data in the background: To keep the display clear, this data field shows two essential main values on the watch: Your relative altitude (ALT) (altitude relative to the starting point) and your current compass heading (HDG) in degrees. All other highly complex metrics are continuously measured in the background and written directly into your FIT file, which is available as detailed graphs in Garmin Connect after synchronization. The following 7 values are recorded and provided as a chart: - Real-time Air Pressure (hPa): The raw barometric pressure of the environment. - Relative Cave Depth (m): Automatic zero-point setting at start. Measures every vertical meter based on air pressure and temperature. - G-Force (g): Measures vertical acceleration forces during movement. - Vertical Speed (m/s): A second-by-second variometer for ascent or descent. - Climb Rate (m/min): A variometer of your ascents and descents smoothed over the minute. - Compass Heading (°): Precise 0–360° orientation for later analysis of covered paths, completely GPS-independent. - Mechanical Chaos Score (MCS): A high-end metric that analyzes the relationship between metabolic energy and mechanical output. A high value signals "irregular" movements or loss of efficiency. Ideal for analyzing technical climbing or crawling in tight spots. SETTINGS: - Configure Gear Weight & Temperature: Via the app settings (Connect IQ), you can define your additional gear weight as well as the cave temperature (if no external Tempe sensor is present). The algorithm uses these for precise weight and performance calculations. - Tempe Sensor Support: The module supports the external Garmin Tempe sensor via ANT+. If no Tempe sensor is connected, the cave temperature value configurable in the settings is automatically used. *** Important Notes *** * I am a caver, NOT a programmer. For the most precise recording of altitude data, the use of an external Garmin Tempe sensor is recommended. Clip it as far away from your body as possible, for example on your tackle bag.
