Porcelain borrows from blue and white ware. A ring of hand-painted floral scroll runs around the dial, and the time sits in the clear white centre the way a mark sits in the bottom of a bowl. The blue is deliberately uneven, with the pooling and thinning you get from a brush on glaze, so the pattern never looks printed. A faint crackle line crosses the white to remind you it is fired clay. Deep cobalt on warm ivory. The always-on view keeps the scroll ring in a single tone.
