Chains tells you which disc to throw, using the distances you actually get rather than the numbers on the rim. Every time you walk to your disc and pick the next one, the watch has measured the gap you just covered - that is the carry of the throw you made. Disc by disc it builds a mean and a spread from your own arm, and until it has enough throws it leans on what a disc of that type does for a player of your level. The choice is not the disc whose average lands nearest. Chains works out, for each disc in the bag, how likely that throw finishes inside the circle around the target, so a tight disc that comes up short loses to a slightly wider one that sits on it. Headwind, tailwind and crosswind shift the expected carry, and a climb or a drop to the basket shifts it again. The distance itself comes from GPS once the basket position is known, which the watch records the moment you hole out.
