Your watch shows the air temperature, and that is not the number that decides whether you will be scraping in the morning. On a clear, still night a car window and a blade of grass radiate their heat straight out to the sky and get almost nothing back, so they end up several degrees colder than the air around them. That is why there is frost on the windscreen at three degrees above zero. Rime works out that difference, hour by hour, from the cloud cover, the wind, the humidity and the dew point in your own hourly forecast. The first screen is a 24-hour ring with the night in shadow and the frosty hours in ice blue, the lowest glass temperature in the middle, and the window in which frost forms. Swipe on for the whole night as a curve, for the car page with your departure time and an estimate of the scraping minutes, and for the garden page with the low on grass height, which is colder again, and the hour it lifts. If rain meets a road below freezing, Rime says so separately, because black ice is a different problem from frost. WHAT IT DOES - Surface temperature for glass, road and grass, worked out from cloud, wind, humidity and the radiative loss to a clear sky - Frost or black ice, told apart by the frost point: a window below zero in dry air stays clear - An estimate of the scraping minutes at your departure time, and how much earlier to set off - The night as a curve, with air, glass and grass against the freezing line - Garden page: the low on grass height, the hours below zero, and when it rises again - Altitude correction of 0.65 degrees per 100 metres from the barometer, for when the forecast is made for another level - A sky-view setting for a carport, a wall or trees, an evening reminder, five languages, and a glance with tonight's verdict WHAT IT NEEDS - A phone in range at some point in the evening, because the hourly forecast comes from there - The hourly forecast reaches about twelve hours ahead, sometimes nine: in the late afternoon it does not always reach the morning yet, and Rime then shows how far it does reach - It is an estimate from a model, not a measurement of your own windscreen
