Description
Nocto is the calculating side of night photography, on your wrist: it works out when the Milky Way core is high enough, when it is properly dark, and how much moon falls across that window. The core sits at a fixed point in the sky, so its rise, its transit and its height follow from the sidereal time at your longitude - and the sun and the moon come from a truncated VSOP87 and ELP-2000 running on the watch itself. The usable window is where two things overlap: the core above your chosen altitude, and the sun more than 18 degrees below the horizon. The moon gets a verdict in three words instead of a number - clean, moonlit or hopeless - with the moon-free part of the window worked out separately. Next to that sit the two shutter rules: NPF against the old 500 rule for your own sensor, and an ND calculator with a countdown for anything past thirty seconds, so you can keep your gloves on. This is not a star chart and not a golden hour app: it is the arithmetic you would otherwise do on a phone in the dark. WHAT IT DOES - Tonight's usable window on a 24-hour ring, with the dark hours and the moon-free part marked - Rise, transit and peak altitude of the galactic centre, drawn as a curve across the night - Sunset, nautical and astronomical twilight, at both ends of the night - Moon phase, rise and set, and a three-level verdict on how much it spoils the window - The NPF rule for the longest shutter without star trails, side by side with the 500 rule - ND filter maths: metered shutter plus stops, with a countdown timer for long exposures - Camera profiles with sensor width and megapixels, so the pixel pitch is yours - Seven nights ahead, each with its window length and verdict - Five languages and a glance with tonight's window WHAT IT NEEDS - A GPS fix once, for your latitude and longitude - No phone, no account, no internet - everything is worked out on the watch
